Papyrin Leonid Pavlovich was born in the city of Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) in 1937. He graduated from Faculty of Sverdlovsk Geophysical Institute of Mining with an impressive major -- "Mining Engineer-Geophysicist". After graduation he worked in the Urals geophysical expedition in the Verkhnyaya Pyshma town, Sverdlovsk region. In 1967, he was sent an invitation to live and work in Tajikistan, sharing his valuable experience in specialized geophysical research methods in engineering. At that time, his knowledge and skills were needed at the geological, hydro-geological, and geo-ecological research facilities of TajikGeologiya (Tajik Geology) in the Republic of Tajikistan.
During the period from 1967 to 1994 he lived and worked in Dushanbe as a chief of "Pamir Geophysical Party" (until 1982, the party was called "Gidrogeofizicheskaya" (Hydro-Geophysical)) in South Geophysical expedition of TajikGeologiya. Papyrin has travelled to every possible corner of Tajikistan, by car and by helicopter. Over 27 years of his geophysical studies, his party performed research in more than hundred sites located throughout the Tajikistan. With his team he has spent 10 summers and 2 winter seasons at Lake Sarez, conducting his historical research. His research on Lake Sarez is considered the best among other existing research projects, past and present.
In 1994, he had to leave Tajikistan as a refugee due to the socio-economic crisis and the subsequent shut down of the Pamir Party. Currently he lives in Moscow and is working at the department № 2 of the Centre for Regional Geophysical and Geo-Ecological research. He is the head of "Geophysics, Engineering, and Geo-Ecological Laboratory".
