The exchange rate of the dollar against the Tajik national currency, the somoni, has not changed despite withdrawal of a large amount of the somoni from the circulation in connection with the beginning of a large-scale Roghun share sale campaign in the country.

An official exchange rate of the dollar against the somoni set by the National Bank of Tajikistan for January 7 is 1:4.3715.

The exchange rate of the dollar against the somoni in the majority of currency exchange offices in Dushanbe has not changed as well, remaining 1:4.38, while in some currency exchange offices it is even higher -- 1:4.40.

The exchange rates of the euro and the Russian ruble (RR) have also not changed – 1:6.40 and 10:1.42 respectively.

We will recall that some local experts expected USD to devaluate during the days of mass sale of shares in Roghun.

Speaking at a ceremony of presentation of shares in NBO Roghun, Tajik central bank head Sharif Rahimzoda said on December 25, 2009 a large amount of the national currency will be withdrawn from circulation during the days of mass sale of shares that may lead to devaluation of foreign currencies in the country.  According to him, Tajik central bank will be supporting the foreign currency exchange rate as far as possible during this period.  “The NBT will be taking measures to keep the USD exchange rate because the fall in the dollar exchange rate will be not for the benefit of the national budget,” Rahimzoda noted.
