Micheline Calmy-Rey: Switzerland to assist Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in water management improvement

October 9, 2009, Daniyar Karimov

Switzerland will assist Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to raise effectiveness of water distribution and use, Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said in Bishkek Friday.

The foreign official says the water problem in Central Asia is obvious and Switzerland would like to contribute to its solution.

“There are regional projects elaborated especially for effective distribution of water between Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. We are going to continue working in this direction, but it does not mean that we promise to settle all water-related issues. Problematic water use in Central Asia has to do with human rights, security and environment. Switzerland is ready to assist the region in organizing discussions and dialogs between the parties,” Micheline Calmy-Rey said.
